Piano Program

The purpose of this course is to teach the student the basic and even intermediate concepts of piano interpretation, starting with warm-ups, techniques, and methodologies. Since this is an individually tailored program, the repertoire has a bit more flexibility, and the student can choose which genre they want to focus on in the end.

Objectives

  • Learn the appropriate warm-ups and stretches to prevent injuries.
  • Learn the proper hand position on the piano to avoid tension buildup.
  • Practice scales, technique, and mechanical exercises to achieve finger dexterity.
  • Learn to read chord charts and sheet music to facilitate learning and ease on the instrument.

Stages

Awareness
  1. Learn the warm-up and stretching exercises for the entire upper body, which is the most used in piano performance.
  2. Learn the proper hand position on the piano, mirror scales, the most ergonomic finger positions, and some easy songs to introduce the piano.
  3. Introduction to some methodologies developed for the piano, such as Hanon and Czerny, to help the student acquire new skills and dexterity.
  4. Learn the basic concepts of sheet music reading.
  5. Learn all major and minor scales with their respective fingerings and corresponding chords.
Fundamentals
  1. Work with some conventional classical pieces such as Bach’s minuets.
  2. The in-depth study will be conducted in the genre that the student is interested in; however, the student will have to participate in the general ensembles of the School.

In-depth Study
The in-depth study will focus on the genre in which the student is interested. However, the student will also need to participate in the general ensembles of the School.
